CREEKRATS GOLD · GOLD INVESTMENT

Understanding gold as an investment.

Gold can be held in your hand, stored in a professional vault, owned through a fund or approached through the businesses that mine it. The name may be the same. The investment is not.

A CLEARER STARTING POINT

Understand what you own

01

Ownership

A bullion coin, an ETF share and an interest in a mining company create very different forms of exposure to gold.

02

Costs

Premiums, spreads, storage, fund fees and trading costs can all shape the result, often in different ways.

03

Risk

Price risk is only the beginning. Liquidity, leverage, security, operations and counterparties also matter.

01 · WHY GOLD?

An asset that does not fit neatly into one box

Gold is a commodity, a monetary asset, a material used in jewellery and technology, and a long-standing store of wealth. That combination helps explain why it continues to occupy a distinctive place in markets and human behaviour.

GOLD IS UNUSUAL

It produces no income of its own

Unlike a business, bond or rental property, gold does not generate earnings, interest or rent. Its investment case rests elsewhere: scarcity, liquidity, diversification, confidence and the price another buyer is willing to pay.

Most gold ever mined still exists Central banks hold it as a reserve asset It trades in a global, highly liquid market Its price can rise or fall sharply

02 · WAYS TO INVEST

One metal. Different investments.

How you obtain exposure to gold can fundamentally change what you own, what it costs, how readily it can be sold and which risks you accept.

DIRECT OWNERSHIP

Physical Gold

Bullion coins and bars offer tangible ownership, while introducing questions of premiums, authenticity, storage, insurance and resale.

EXCHANGE-TRADED EXPOSURE

Gold ETFs & ETCs

Exchange-traded products can track gold without requiring home storage, but structure, fees, custody and legal ownership still need scrutiny.

03 · PHYSICAL GOLD

Hold gold in your hand

For many people, this is where gold becomes tangible. Physical ownership can be direct and understandable, but the details of the product, price, storage and eventual sale still matter.

BUYING

Price is more than spot

Dealer premiums, product availability, payment method and delivery all affect the price paid.

STORING

Security changes the equation

Home storage, safe-deposit facilities and professional vaults each introduce different trade-offs.

SELLING

Your exit matters

Recognition, condition, dealer demand and the bid–ask spread can influence how readily gold is sold.

04 · LEARN BEFORE YOU BUY

The vocabulary of physical gold

The price displayed on a market screen is not normally the price paid for a coin or small bar. A handful of core ideas can make a substantial difference to how a purchase is understood.
