WHAT FOUR NINES MEANS
Almost the whole coin is fine gold.
A fineness of 99.99% means at least 999.9 parts of every 1,000 are gold. The one-ounce Australian Kangaroo therefore weighs almost exactly the same as the fine gold it contains.
That does not make it automatically better than an alloyed coin. Investors still need to compare premium, resale spread, local demand and handling requirements.
AUTHENTICATION FEATURES
A small letter intended to make copying harder.
Micro-laser letter
The Perth Mint specifies a micro-laser engraved letter on the reverse of the 2026 one-ounce coin, visible only under magnification.
Check the specifications
Security features support rather than replace checks of weight, diameter, thickness, appearance and provenance.
Use a reputable seller
A known dealer, clear invoice and credible buyback policy provide protections that visual inspection alone cannot.
Do not assume every size, year or collector version carries exactly the same security feature. Verify the specification for the particular coin offered.

2026 REVERSE
Two kangaroos
Neil Hollis’s design shows two kangaroos leaping through water, with distant landscape elements and a 40th-anniversary privy mark.
OBVERSE
King Charles III
The 2026 obverse carries Dan Thorne’s effigy of King Charles III together with the monetary denomination.
Most smaller gold Kangaroos receive new reverse artwork each year. Particular dates may interest collectors, but bullion value is still driven primarily by gold content, premium and resale spread.
CORE BULLION SIZES
One ounce, three fractions and a kilogram.
The four smaller 2026 coins share the anniversary reverse. Fractional coins lower the entry cost but often carry a higher premium per ounce.
The one-kilogram format retains Stuart Devlin’s classic bounding red-kangaroo design. Verify current-year specifications and availability separately.

FROM NUGGET TO KANGAROO
An investment programme that changed its identity.
The programme began with the Australian Nugget. Its first proof issue appeared in late 1986, followed by bullion coins celebrating famous natural gold nuggets.
In 1989, The Perth Mint shifted to the kangaroo, a symbol more immediately associated with Australia. Stuart Devlin’s bounding red kangaroo became the enduring large-format design, while smaller gold coins developed annual-changing artwork.
The 2026 issue marks 40 years of the programme with a special privy mark. That anniversary belongs to the whole Nugget-to-Kangaroo lineage.
